Makers marks were stamps or incised marks that were imprinted on a piece of pottery while the clay was still wet enough to be manipulated. These marks indicate the potter or pottery by which the vessel was produced. This would be equivalent to signing a painting or drawing. Most marks were fairly simple designs so the image would be easily recognized.
