I began looking at medieval pottery seriously when I discovered a book by McCarthy and Brooks called Medieval Pottery in Great Britain 900-1200 AD. Here is the third generation of pipkins I've made based on the archeaological drawings in that book. Pipkins were used for cooking potages, medicinal cures, and other liquids. They are versatile and handy little pots. |
| A later period version of the pipkin is illustrated here. This pipkin has a much sturdier handle and wider feet. I glazed both the inside and outside of this pot for ease of cleaning. The glazing is in keeping with the coloration found on many English wares. This piece was inspired by Jacqueline Pearce's Border Wares. | ![]() |
