Obruch

The Obruch is a hat this is worn typically by women who are about to be wed or who are young. If the hat is tied in back with a ribbon, then it is a hat worn by young women who are attending a festival or some such event. If there is no tie in back and the hat is constructed like a "crown", then it is typically a hat worn by a bride.

Like the kokoschniks, the obruch can sport riazny as additional ornamentation. Also like the kokoschniks, these hats can (and typically are) worn over a cap and ubrus (veil).

The medieval versions of these hats would use leather, birchbark or possibly even rawhide as the foundation. Velvet, taffeta (not like the current day taffeta), or silk would have been used for the underlying covering of the foundation. The overall piece would be encrusted with pearling, embroidery, filigree work and applique.
