The Shuba is a versatile outer garment worn by both men and women. It is a coat with long sleeves and side gores. Typically the shuba would be split in the front only to the waist with closures from the waist to the neck. A wide sash would be wrapped about the waist. Sleeves could be either wide, as depicted here, or tapered to make a snug fit at the wrist. The shuba hemline ends at mid-calf.
The shuba is a garment well suited for outdoor wear. Combine it with a fur hat, mittens or muff, and boots and you're set for whatever Grandfather Winter brings.
My shuba is split all the way down the front to allow indoor wear without suffering unduly from the heat. It is trimmed with embroidered strips of broadcloth and fur. The geometric pattern of the yellow fabric is in keeping with medieval Russian fabric designs.
